What is the Disability Rights Movement?
- The disability rights movement is a social global movement that was originated during the 1960s inspired by the civil rights movement and the women's rights movement. Its main objective is to secure equal opportunities and equal rights for all people with disabilities. It is a true mosaic, with diversity as its central characteristic.
- It encompasses organizations of disability activists around the world fighting for accessibility and safety in architecture, transportation, and the physical environment; equal opportunities in independent living, employment equity, education, and housing; and freedom from discrimination, abuse, neglect, and from other rights violation.
Other students in this POL 4900 seminar are researching other U.S. social movements. You can learn about their research here.
